Party Like Its Deutschland 2014

July 14, 2014

As I sat and watched the World Cup championship match on Sunday between Germany and Argentina, I couldn’t believe how fixated I’d become on a sport I have always considered to be humdrum and inferior. I really caught what the media has been referring to as “World Cup fever.”

I also realized after watching hours upon hours of match play, that soccer is the gold standard of sports flopping.

Enough already! You fell…and you CAN get up.

True, the fact that the United States and Italy-the two clubs I pledge allegiance to-made early exits, I was curious to see for myself if Germany’s 7-1 thrashing of Brazil was a godsend, or if perhaps this was one of the best soccer teams ever assembled in Cup play. I came to the conclusion that this was indeed a good team, with a damn fine goalie in Manuel Neuer. While Argentina did have opportunities to steal this game, I believe the best team did prevail in front of an estimated television audience of 800 million.

Russia will host the next World Cup in 2018, and I will be tuned in for sure.
