Eddie T. Elf
When my kids were little, we used to take a drive and look at all the Christmas lights lighting up nearby neighborhoods. We would ooh and ahhhh over them all and pick our favorite house.
My co-worker Phil was working on a list of all the best places to go and asked if we’ve gone up to Pascquale. We hadn’t.
“Oh! You have to! The kids will love it!” he said.
So that year, (I believe it was 2004) began a Christmas tradition that has brought us so much joy over the years!
When we first met Eddie, Alex, my then 5 year old, was timidly giving Eddie his Christmas list when a couple of kids ran up behind and excitedly began shouting at Eddie through the cottage windows, to which Eddie replied, “Hey, back off! Let this kid have his turn!” which silenced the intruders. He gently urged Alex to finish his list, handed him a candy cane and wished him a Merry Christmas before moving on to my daughter, who laughed and joked with Eddie before he sent us on our way.
We continued this tradition through to this year- My daughter is now 17 and my son 14 and they love Eddie just as much as they did at the tender ages of five and eight. We got lucky this year and ended up being the last visitors of the night- expecting to say a quick “hello” and be on our way. But he spent a good 45 minutes with us, telling us the story of how Eddie the Elf was born and the stories up to his retirement. We could tell that he loved what he’s done and is just as sad to let it go as we are to see him go..
